Reflections On Our First Six Months as Innkeepers

When we purchased Osceola Mill House B&B, we envisioned a life filled with charming conversations, freshly brewed coffee, and satisfied guests. We also expected a learning curve with this new chapter of our lives. Now, six months in and heading into the New Year, we’re reflecting on the triumphs, challenges, and lessons learned.

The Honeymoon Phase

The first few weeks felt like a whirlwind. We walked into the busy season and day one started hosting an endless stream of interesting people. Guests arrived with stories from all over the world, and it was thrilling to play host, provide a comfortable space, and share our favorite local spots.

Our new life felt surreal—like being the protagonists of a feel-good movie. Every day brought new challenges, but they seemed manageable in the glow of excitement. We replaced all the mattresses & pillows, purchased new handmade quilts for each room, and experimented with breakfast menus.

Lessons in Hospitality

Running a bed and breakfast is far more than providing a cozy place to stay. It’s about creating an experience. From curating the perfect playlist for breakfast to remembering repeat guests’ favorite tea blends, every detail matters.

We quickly realized that no two guests are the same. While some love engaging in conversation, others prefer quiet mornings with a book. Learning to read people’s preferences and adapt accordingly has been both challenging and rewarding. We’ve developed a newfound appreciation for the nuances of hospitality.

The Surprises We Didn’t Expect

One of the most surprising aspects of owning a B&B has been the wear and tear—on both the property and ourselves. Managing repairs and upkeep has become a constant task. We’ve learned to navigate everything from slow shower drains to late-night fire alarm malfunctions.

Another unexpected challenge has been the emotional toll. There are moments when things don’t go as planned: situations beyond our control, a last-minute cancellation disrupts our plans, or the sheer weight of responsibility feels overwhelming. In those moments, we’ve leaned on each other and reminded ourselves why we started this adventure.

The Joys That Make It Worthwhile

The joys of running a B&B have far outweighed the struggles. Seeing guests leave with smiles on their faces and reading the heartfelt messages they leave in our guest books is the ultimate reward.

We’ve also gained a deeper connection to our community. Recommending local restaurants, shops and activities, and farm-to-table sourcing has strengthened our relationships with neighboring businesses as well as our Amish neighbors.

What We’ve Learned

If there’s one overarching lesson we’ve learned, it’s this: flexibility is key. Things will go wrong, plans will change, and the unexpected will happen. Embracing those moments and approaching them with a sense of humor has been essential.

Looking Ahead

As we look to the future, we’re filled with optimism. We’re planning to host more events, build on relationships to curate access to local venues, make essential repairs and updates to the property, and continue refining the guest experience. The first six months have been deeply fulfilling.

To anyone considering this path: it’s not easy, but it’s worth it. Owning a bed and breakfast is a lifestyle. And while it’s not always picture-perfect, the memories we’ve made and the connections we’ve fostered make every challenge worthwhile.
