Who Doesn’t Need a Vacation? - January 2021
I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve lived a charmed life…..or blessed life….whichever is your personal perspective. So many of you visit this beautiful place time and time again and report back to us on Facebook and Instagram or in person that you consider this house your “home away from home”. Well remarkably, this is my home, and I, like you, love being here.
So when I tell people that we are closing down for a period of time and going on vacation somewhere, folks are apt to say, “why do you need to go away on vacation? You already live in this most beautiful house in a wonderful location.”
And that is certainly true. I wake up in the morning and still pinch myself at the wonder of this place that I call home. All I can say in response is that I do feel the real need to go away to someplace new on a rather regular basis. I’ve always loved to travel just to see new places and things. My Sicilian Grandmother would call me “Pedi Longu”, which translates to “Long Foot” and refers to a person who frequently desires to be away from home. You were right, Mommom; that surely is me.
But now I have definitive proof from a leading health expert that my desire to travel is actually a benefit to my aging brain. On a recent episode of CBS Sunday Morning, renown health commentator and brain surgeon Dr. Sanjay Gupta talked about activities that we as older adults can do to keep our brains healthy and agile. Along with all of the regular recommendations of a good diet, exercise and stimulating activities such as puzzles, he advises a regular immersion into change. Dr. Gupta says that all of us should regularly get ourselves out of our “brain comfort zone” and allow our brains to struggle a bit with coping with something very new and different. It’s sort of like mental calisthenics to keep the mind active and flexible. And, says Dr. Gupta, travel is one of the best ways to do that.
So with winter and the pandemic still raging on, we feel the need to do a little more for our own health and to go away somewhere warmer. We are going on a well-planned, socially-distanced-aware road trip to see what we can find that is open and safe to explore. As is our custom, we will be closing the Inn for a couple of weeks rather than turning it over to professional Inn-Sitters to manage in our absence. We will open again at the end of February, hopefully refreshed and eager for another year – our 16th - of welcoming all of you back to do the same.
In the meantime, we can all continue to stay in touch. Check out availability right here on our secure website and book your next stay. If you have any questions – feel free to contact us by email, and I promise to get back to you as soon as possible. We are so looking forward to new experiences in 2021 and healing from the scars of this past year.
